Makeup Monday: Loving Nicki Minaj

Minaj channelling Marie Antoinette for Allure's April edition
Nicki Minaj is my new hair and makeup muse. From tri-coloured hair to dying her skin blue for a Vogue shoot, Nicki is never one to play it safe in the beauty stakes!

Nicki is also the new face of MAC's Viva Glam collection along with Ricky Martin. "Nicki's Lipstick" ($36) is a pretty bright pink with a satin finish. All proceeds from the sales of Viva Glam products go to the MAC AIDS Fund, which helps men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. A great excuse to buy a gorgeous lipstick? I'll take three please!

Nicki's staple makeup items include a vibrant lipstick paired with a full set of false lashes, black winged eyeliner (for when she's feeling more subtle) or a pop of neon eye shadow to really bring the "wow" factor. While her uninhibited approach to colourful cosmetics may be daunting for those of us who aren't famous performers (rocking up to a staid office job wearing neon blue eyeshadow might not go down so well), you can definitely get a bit of Nicki's love of colour in your own makeup routine.

A great way to experiment with colour is with eyeliner- just try a bright shimmering blue, green or purple colour instead of your regular neutrals. Simply line your top lashes for an effect that's not too in-your-face or for more effect, line the bottom lashes as well. I love to apply colourful eyeliner to my upper and lower inner eye rims, it gives you an amazing look and really shows off the shape of your eyes. Plus it's easier to apply the liner like this than the traditional way!

The other (even easier) way to get some colour happening in your life, a la Nicki, is to get yourself a bright lipstick or lipgloss. It's super easy to apply and always makes you look as if you've made a huge effort when you really haven't! Try a hot pink (Nicki's fave) or go for a traditional red instead- it never goes out of fashion! I love Lancome's La Laque Fever Lipgloss in Electric Pink, it's a never fail shimmering fuchsia that suits practically all skin types. As for a red, I love Nars's uber-famous Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl.

Have a beautiful (and maybe more colourful) week!

xoxo Lauren

  1. It's way outside of the box but she wears it well! When I see pretty shades like that pink lipstick it makes me wish I could do bold colors but with a combination of freckles, dark hair and, erm, aging - I'm limited. (So I make up for it with clothes and accessories). ;)
